2023 National Extension Tourism Conference Call for Abstracts

UPDATE: Deadline extended to May 5, 2023!

The mission of the National Extension Tourism (NET) is to integrate research, education and outreach within Cooperative Extension and Sea Grant to support sustainable tourism, thus contributing to the long-term economic development, environmental stewardship, and socio-cultural wellbeing of communities and regions. The 2023 National Extension Tourism Conference, organized by the National Extension Tourism Design Team, will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 24-27, 2023. This is an outstanding opportunity for Extension professionals, academic faculty, industry professionals, and others working in the broad area of tourism and recreation, including tourism service providers and businesses, to share programs, initiatives, research, and success stories, and network with other professionals.

On behalf of the NET Conference Steering Committee and Design Team, we are excited to have you join us in Milwaukee, WI, for the 2023 NET Conference. Since our network last met in 2021, our tourism communities have faced immense challenges from natural disasters and social unrest to starting to recover from a global pandemic. How we as tourism professionals have responded and adapted to these changes also continues to evolve. This year’s conference theme of “Envisioning the Future of Extension in Tourism” will reflect on these transformations and catalyze future extension programming that best serves our stakeholders’ needs. Presentations can share applications, case examples or programs across a breadth of areas including agritourism, coastal tourism, community tourism, outdoor recreation, tourism leadership, emerging trends or other topics related to sustainable tourism. We invite proposals for presentations in the following categories. In addition, we encourage presentations that incorporate responses to community resilience, justice, diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.

  1. Economic Impact
  2. Outreach & Engagement
  3. Applied Research
  4. Evaluation
  5. Case Studies
  6. Training & Certification
  7. Academic Research
  8. Education
  9. Research and Extension – Integrated Projects

 Presentation Types:

  • Oral Presentation (20 minute presentation plus 5 minutes for Q&A)
  • Poster Presentation
  • Workshop or Panel Presentation (60 minutes) – Workshops are not just extended oral presentations. They must include an interactive component providing hands-on experiential opportunities for professional development. Panel presentations must include a facilitator and multiple presenters. The facilitator should submit the proposal and is required to identify, secure and coordinate panelists. A limited number of workshops and panel presentations will be accepted.

Scholarship Information
The conference planning team is currently working to secure funding that would allow us to provide scholarships to conference participants. Priority for available scholarship funding will go to presenters, especially those from underrepresented institutions (e.g., 1890s, 1994s, minority-serving institutions). We already have some funding available to support student participation and will share more details as soon as possible. If you have concerns about being able to participate in the conference due to financial constraints, we encourage you to still submit an abstract.
